Occasionally during our journeys, we encounter something both educational and enchanting. Just 4.6 miles north of Florence, Oregon, and a quarter mile from our campground at the Florence Elks, lies an 18-acre botanical preserve dedicated to the preservation of a single plant. This plant is the carnivorous Darlingtonia californica, also known as the cobra lily or western pitcher plant. It lures its prey with a captivating sweet aroma, and the top of the plant is tinged with red, attracting certain insects and then traps and digests them. This flared top of the plant leads into a hollow dome and traps its prey. In late spring the plants bloom with purple and yellow flowers that can be 12 inches above the plants; it is quite spectacular!
This species of Darlingtonia can only be found in Oregon. Oregon Parks have ensured that the short loop walk through the bog is wheelchair accessible, with overlook stops along the route. There's no need for hiking boots; regular tennis shoes will do just fine. It's a scenic and brief 20 to 30-minute stop, while you're exploring the Oregon Coast. We stop in every time we are in the area because it is so enjoyable and there is no fee to visit - bonus!
Amenities: Pit style restroom, picnic tables and is wheelchair accessible
Operated by Oregon parks and Recreation Department
Cheers!
