We arrive in Quartzsite on a 78-degree day, searching for the view-navion rally in the heart of BLM desert country. The roads are made of gravel and dirt, with washes that require careful navigation. Then, you come across the View/Navions—hundreds of them—creating a surreal scene. As we drive in, we spot our friend George dashing across the desert, waving his arms to ensure we see him. We park our rig next to his and settle in to four days of concerts, karoking, pancake breakfasts, large fires at night and many different seminars. The camaraderie and friendships to be made are sure to be lasting memories.
Returning to George, he is a good friend of ours and a humble yet incredibly talented country western star. He is the leader of The George Britt Band, located in Carrollton, Georgia. George performed two concerts for us, and they were amazing. Then, Mike, a harmonica player from East Texas, joined George, making an already incredible concert even better. One of my favorite songs that George sings is dedicated to his wife, Joanna, and it's titled "Go Brain Go." You can find George's music on Spotify! We also enjoyed two fun nights of karaoke with a talented DJ named Tony.
Although Quartzsite may not be the most picturesque destination, characterized by its dirt, rocks, and a few mesa verde and mesquite trees, gathering around 150 like-minded View Navion owners creates a unique atmosphere. With everyone speaking the same language, the addition of seminars, entertainment, a large fire, and discussions about solar power and RV modifications turns it into an RV desert party. People like Winnie, who is 85 years old, have been traveling from Alaska for the past 16 years to attend this rally.
Tips and tricks:
Firstly, ensure you are prepared for boondocking. This means your water tanks should be full, and your black and gray tanks should be completely empty. Additionally, your propane tanks need to be filled. If your rig doesn't have solar power, you'll need a generator. You're camping on BLM land, which requires a $40.00 fee for a two-week stay. Just a mile into town, you'll find facilities to refuel, fill your water tanks, dump your black and gray tanks and get more propane. Groceries are accessible, though they are limited in selection and fairly expensive. On the final day of the rally, the big tent show takes place. This event features hundreds of vendors offering a wide range of RV supplies, parts, and items you likely don't need. It's a fun one time shopping experience for us.
